Leo,
All of a sudden an XP PRO computer boots, but
stops with the error message that the windows\system32\config\system file is either missing or corrupted. The file exists and is about 5 meg, so it must be corrupted.
I read your article about using sfc /scannow,
however when I use the original OS CD to boot and get to a command prompt with the "r" recovery option, the sfc.exe is not an available file to run.
Is it on the OS CD?
If not then trying to fix a damaged system file
that is keeping the OS from loading using the sfc
command is useless. No START RUN available !!
What am I missing? If it can't be run from the Recovery Console, then you should tell your readers that for 95% of the time they can not fix a computer that is stuck because of a corrupted file.
I thought I had a bug or something and was going to take my comp to a local shop to get it fixed but you helped me out. Who knew that "explorer" did so much and the system scan helped a bunch to figure out why my computer wasn't running the computer at start up. Thanks Leo!

Leo, I suddenly started being unable to use the photo album on my photoshop elements. It stops while trying to open the program and gives an error message of DirectX installed but can't be initialized please reboot computer and try again. I rebooted without resolution, I ran adware/spyware, virus scans, I tried to redownload DirectX 9.0c, I took off my photoshop and put it back on my drive, I got software that was supposed to help with directory file problems without help. I tried the SFC /scannow but as someone else noted above it requested my CD which is SP1 but then said it wouldn't work because I have SP3 running. Sorry this is so long. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Hi Leo--some good tips above -but still stuck.
OE will not open properly as it says it is already running. Then on trying to close windows it says it IS running but programme not responding so "close programm" required to shut down.

Thus far I have --closed -rebooted--gone back to restore point- started using Thunderbirds fine --but left with the inability to get rid of OE running -cant uninstall either as access denied.
Have installed IE 7 too-hoping it would re-intall OE properly. NOPE -as you inferred .

Bother--

Tried SFC /scannow too-

Any ideas?
Thanks Dick

I'm not totally sure I understand your question, but:

- you can run SFC /SCANNOW from the Start->Run menu item

- you can run SFC /SCANNOW from within a command prompt

You might try safemode, and you might try the recovery
console as well, if things aren't working for you.

ALSO, I'm not 100% convinced that SFC will restore NTLDR. I
could be wrong.

Okay, I have been trying to use SFC for a while now, one time successfully. My question is : Can you run SFC without getting to the "Run" command? I have a problem with a PC not booting, giving me the "Missing NTLDR" error message and I want to use SFC to replace the missing NTLDR files and boot normally again. I notice that you can't really run SFC from a command line prompt, or if you can, I am doing it wrong. Any help would be great, thanks.....Marty

May I have another shot?
When I try to edit my website [Url Removed], it'll took a lot of time (around 15 to 20 mins) to open the members page, and without icons nor pictures. I believe it has to do with an email i received (from a jealous 'hacker' perhaps who does'nt know how to animate), when this things started.
Please do help me.

If you run the system file checker (sfc /scannow) and you get: "windows resource protection could not perform the requested
operation" try this:

-Reboot your PC, and after the BIOS screen keep pressing F8 to get to the advanced boot menu.

-Choose Repair your computer

-Login as Administrator or the equivalent

-Open the command prompt, and type CHKDSK C: /F /R

This will scan your hard drive for errors in the FAT (File Allocation Table). It will perform a physical scan of your hard drive and attempt to repair any errors it finds. The logic behind this step is that the SFC /SCANNOW won't run properly b/c it cannot actually access the files on the hard drive.

As several others above, I ran SFC, confident that I would be able to point to the proper directory when asked to insert my Windows CD. I was not given this option -- only 'retry; more info and cancel'. When 'cancel' was selected, I was not given an option to browse for the correct directory'. I tried burning a CD populated with the I386 directory, but this didn't work either! Any suggestions? Thanks, Marlene

Assuming you mean Chkdsk, not "check", it sounds like a bad sector on the disk,
offhand. I'd probably have you follow the recommendations in this article:
http://ask-leo.com/chkdsk_runs_on_every_boot_but_fails_and_my_system_is_unstable_what_can_i_do.html
(even though it's about a slightly different scenario, these are the steps I'd
have you do.)

Hi Leo, I tried using SFC /scannow to resolve an issue with msiexec.exe, which is somehow corrupt and not even a re-installation helped to fix it. SFC runs fine, until it asks me for the Windows CD, I don't have any, and I modified the registry in order for windows to look for any installation files in the C:\windows\I386 folder. It still asks for the CD, and there's no "Browse..." button to be found... any clues? thanks! and keep up the good work! (I promised I already tried all your suggestions for solving msiexec.exe problems!!) ;)

For people who run virus scans and find nothing, try ewido.net on left hand side is a button that says scan now, run that (trust me finds more things then Norton ever will) Also there is a way to change the path for the SFC to run correctly WITHOUT the CD... you have to edit the regisrty to point to your I386 folder.... forget which key, but give me a bit and I might be able to find out for y'all... I myself am having same problem running SFC going to try Leo's fix before I change anything else in the registry....

I had the same problem, i.e., SFC not running as it should have. In XP SP2 (and all XP should have SP2) there is a repair and maintain instruction on Microsoft info pages. Look for it under Windows Repairs. Run it according to their instructions. You will need your Windows disc and patience. Run that, then cut and paste Leo's coding for SFC in the Run box. Works like a charm.
